Even the best strategies cannot predict the future - only anticipate it. That is why so many brilliant plans fail. That is also why the mere mention of the word 'Strategy' makes management tremble.
Strategy is not the actions we take; strategy is the reason we take them.
When I began advising the Audiovisual Industry in 2006, I envisioned lots of strategic planning sessions and rewarding process engagements that would follow. I could not have been more wrong about what business owners really need.
They need to fail more often and get better at it.
Strategic planning postpones the most valuable part of the journey. What we learn from failures is not what to avoid - though there are those lessons to be learned - it is to better understand the reasons behind trying new ideas.
